What is Reiki?

The principle of hands on healing and distance healing has remained with us from ancient days. From basic instinct to cover a sore area with your hands or a mothers instinct to hold a child in pain to the work of the spiritual leaders of each religion offering up prayers for the sick,   mankind has developed beliefs and ceremonies.

"Reiki" is simply a Japanese name for the universal life force energy that exists within us and all around us and is responsible for animating everything.

Rei means universal or present everywhere.  But a more esoteric interpretation is that it mean universal spiritual consciousness or knowledge.  The wisdom that comes from the Source or God, or whatever you want to call it.

Ki is the Japanese for life force,  known as Chi in Chinese,  Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian.   If your own life force is low,  or its flow is restricted  you are more vulnerable to illness.  Increasing the flow enables you to heal more quickly.

Whatever you consider the source of that energy to be -  God,  the earth,  or anything else Reiki provides a technique for linking with that energy,  increasing its flow within ourselves and enabling us to channel that flow to others.  Unlike spiritual healing a healer does not use their own reserves of energy to pass on to others,  but acts as a channel,  drawing on the universal life force and passing it on to those who need it.  People who already do healing work consistently report an major increase in the strength of their healing energies after taking Reiki training.  Reiki is not a religion,  and is not inconsistent with any of the major religions.

There are many stories about the origins of Reiki and its links with Christianity and Buddhism.   The facts are that it was developed by Mikao Usui who was born in the mid 1800's,  and built into a formal method based in a clinic in Tokyo from 1925 by Chujiro Hayashi,  a retired naval officer.   The technique did not come to the West until the 1970's through Hawayo Takata who was born in Hawaii but her parents were Japanese immigrants.    Since 1980 Reiki has spread rapidly,  there are thousands of teachers world wide with hundreds of thousands of people practicing Reiki on a daily basis.
